Acquiring Discus Fish Breeders, & Getting Them To Breed

The easiest way to acquire discus fish breeders is to buy a pair from an importer. However, you must make sure you got proof from the importer that the pair can breed, and there is always risk involved. Finally, cost is high compared to other methods below.

You can invest in 8 to 10 young discus at around 3in. Feed them and grow them up. If you are in luck, you may get 1 to 2 pair of discus fish breeders. Otherwise, you can buy 4 discus at around 5in size. As they are in young adult stage, you might be able to differentiate the sex of the fishes. This method is cheaper, but you need time.

In the event you have a mature pair of discus fish, but they are breeding...try the following.

"Absence makes the heart fonder"...separate them for a couple of days by adding a tank divider. You can feed the female a rich diet of frozen bloodworms to condition the female and get her ready to breed. Reintroduce them after a few days, and this should increase the chances.

Make sure the water quality is soft, acidic and clean. PH between 6.0 and 7.5 with a general hardness between 5 and 15. Another way to encourage your discus to breed is by doing a 25% water change but drop the temperature by a couple of degrees of the water going in. This imitates there natural habitat and can trigger spawning. Make sure all the pH and hardness is the same making only the temperature different.

Hope the tips on acquiring Discus fish breeders, & getting them to breed helps.
